Particle sizing for flowing colloidal suspensions using flow-differential dynamic microscopy

چکیده

Particle size is a key variable in understanding the behaviour of particulate products that underpin much our modern lives. Typically obtained from suspensions at rest, measuring particle under flowing conditions would enable advances for in-line testing during manufacture and high-throughput development. However, samples are often turbid, multiply scattering light preventing direct use common sizing techniques. Differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) powerful technique analysing video such samples, diffusion hence without need to resolve individual particles while free substantial user input. when applying DDM sample, diffusive dynamics rapidly dominated by flow effects, sizing. Here, we develop "flow-DDM", novel analysis scheme combines optimised imaging conditions, drift-velocity correction modelling impact flow. Flow-DDM allows decoupling motion facilitates successful measurements speeds an order magnitude higher than DDM. We demonstrate generality flow-DDM two separate methods geometries.

Stress distributions in flowing aggregated colloidal suspensions

Simulations of the flow of concentrated aggregated colloidal systems, at the particulate level, are used to investigate the distribution of stresses in the shear-thinning regime. It is found that the distribution of shear stress carried by interparticle bonds decays approximately exponentially at large stresses, but with a double-exponential distribution for values of positive stress. The micro...

Dynamics of polymers in flowing colloidal suspensions.

Using hydrodynamic simulations we examine the behavior of single polymers in a confined colloidal suspension under flow. We study the conformations of both, collapsed and noncollapsed polymers. Our results show that the presence of the colloids has a pronounced effect on the unfolding and refolding cycles of collapsed polymers, but does not have a large effect for noncollapsed polymers. Further...

Video microscopy of colloidal suspensions and colloidal crystals

Colloidal suspensions are simple model systems for the study of phase transitions. Video microscopy is capable of directly imaging the structure and dynamics of colloidal suspensions in different phases. Recent results related to crystallization, glasses, and 2D systems complement and extend previous theoretical and experimental studies. Moreover, new techniques allow the details of interaction...

Sizing of protein A-colloidal gold probes for immunoelectron microscopy

Gold particles in colloidal solutions often vary considerably in size. The finest sols (diameter less than 15 nm), especially, are very heterogeneous, as is indicated by coefficients of variance (CV) of 25-35%. We have complexed staphylococcal protein A with gold particles (PA/Au) and then fractionated the preparations by glycerol or sucrose gradient centrifugation into very homogeneous subfrac...

Destabilization of Colloidal Suspensions 3.1 COLLOIDAL SUSPENSIONS

Many impurities in waters and wastewaters are present as colloidal dispersions, i.e. they occur in particulate form within the approximate size range 1 to 10 -3 μm (refer Fig 1.3). Examples of this type of suspension include clays, substances of biological origin such as natural colour, proteins, carbohydrates and their natural or industrial derivatives. Invariably suspensions of this type poss...
